Course Design: The 5 week online course will consist of synchronous and asynchronous components involving hands-on application of hardware and software for web publishing, and e-learning activities. The Web-based course will be a follow-up to the LIPHEA/HEALTH Alliance E-Learning and Networking Technologies Workshop: Building a Regional Community of Practice. Participants will receive instruction in creating train-the-trainer seminars for non-specialists. Upon completion of the workshop participants will be equipped to conduct seminars for faculty and staff in the use of relevant learning technologies. Additionally, each participant will receive a certificate of completion following the successful completion of a course project.
The course is designed around 3 elements.
1. Conceptual – The Conceptual element is designed to provide you with the conditional knowledge of a particular topic. It focuses on conceptual and theoretical aspects of the discipline. These aspects will be developed via online presentations, self-paced tutorials and facilitated group discussions.
2. Hands-on Practice – Hands-on Practice is where you apply what you have learned. You will use tools and software to create content. You will upload draft versions demonstrating mastery of component content. You will also work collaboratively with your peers to complete some assignments.
3. Production - Production involves actual seminar/course development. You will use what you have learned in the Conceptual and Hands-on Practice elements to create individual courses/seminars to be utilized in the faculty/staff seminar series. Your instructor will be available online to assist in helping determine the most suitable development tools to use.
Topics:
  • Critical e-learning concepts, tools, standards and best practices for East Africa
  • Multimedia production basics for event and lecture capture, course creation and cd- and web-based delivery
  • Access and integration of free Open Educational Resources (OER), data mining and identification of relevant resources to enhance e-learning
  • Establishment of a web publishing process for the development of shared regional web resources (e.g. open courses and “living” digital libraries)

The workshop will focus on the application of a “classroom-in-a-bag” kit for facilitating e-learning activities and developing regional shared resources. The kit consists of robust suite of hardware and software for easy video conferencing, synchronous web-based instruction, the capture and processing of live events and the packaging of course materials and multimedia into shareable, standards-compliant learning objects and modules.

Upon completion of the workshop each participant will have been trained in the utilization of the classroom in a bag and will return to their home institution with a donated kit. A regional community of practice will be established to facilitate continued innovation and long term support in e-learning, web and networking technology.
This course explores aspects of the potential impacts of new information and communication technologies (ICT) on international development. The initial part of the course introduces a macro perspective, focusing on various technologies and ways in which they can be applied in both the developed and developing worlds. The interdisciplinary theoretical modules will be discussed and applied to practical group research projects, the concentrations of which will be selected from local and international field and fieldwork solutions to specific ICT related development problems.
This three-week course was created for a small group of East African Leaders who came to Tulane University to receive training. The materials from the course have been archived and made available to allow others to benefit and learn from the training experience.

The field of instructional technology is growing in it acceptance in society and its ability to deliver significant solutions to instructional problems. Accompanying this growth is the proliferation of instructional development tools and strategies.

The goal of this course is to provide participants with the opportunity to discuss the various aspects of designing and developing materials for an online course.

The objectives are as follows:

1.Participants will be acquainted with the major classes of instructional development tools.

2.Participants will be able to create a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) using the knowledge, data, and instructional objects developed during the certificate program.

3.Participants will be able to use technology to teach and learn at a distance.

Web 2.0 tools are exploding all over the internet. As an educator you have the opportunity to tap into these resources and greatly enhance your ability to share knowledge. In the process you should be able to introduce your students to tools that allow them to become creators of new knowledge. This "course" will introduce you to some of these tools and help you identify ways in which they might be used by you to leverage your experiences and knowledge.
